What's the secret for installation method of UTM series?

One of the advantages to UTM series is that this torque sensor can directly measure torque which applies at its main axis.

The main axis is made out of one shaft.

Due to a single shaft, the alignment has been preadjusted.

As starting torque is quite small, rotation is very smooth.

Following illustration is the installation method for utilizing this main axis to the maximum extent:

Such advantages can be obtained!

  • There are less points to adjust alignment.
  • By rotating in slow speed, fluctuations such as misalignments or angle errors can be checked from torque values.
  • When rotating, the housing vibrates due to fluctuations such as misalignments or angle errors. From these vibrations, misalignments can be checked.

With misalignments and angle errors…

  • A paperclip fell off from the housing of UTM due to vibrations.
  • Phenomenon such as large detection widths on the vibration monitor V100 were confirmed.

The points to adjust alignment are simple, thus it is easier to identify causes of the misalignment.

Probable cause:

  • Alignment adjustments on bearing posts were not enough. (Note: there are only 2 points to adjust alignments.)
  • There is an eccentricity on the motor itself. It vibrates when it is driving.

In fact, with this demonstration, a washer was tucked underneath the fixed base on the motor side by intention.

Removed the washer and readjusted the point to adjust alignments…

We can see the paperclip on the housing of UTM does not move, while the torque output and the vibrating condition and such are improving.

What happens if the housing of UTM is fixed…?

  • The larger fixing points and areas are, the more complicated the causes of misalignments will become.
  • As the housing of UTM is pressed down, it is difficult to notice misalignments. In addition, biased loads affect the bearings and others of UTM and could be a cause of premature failures.

With UTMIII, the latest series of UTM series, the influences

that radial and thrust load exert on accuracy are more reduced

                       than with UTMII!
