"Load cell" is a sensor that measures a weight or a force.

For the load cells as well as amplifiers and indicators where the load cells are connected to, there are "4-wire type" and "6-wire type". If not wired properly, it may cause not only inaccurate measurements, but also may be affected by the temperature or the cable length.

This time, we will explain the wiring method of both 4-wire type and 6-wire type.

Remote Sensing Method

Monitoring +EXC and -EXC on the root of a load cell is called "Remote sensing method". For the 6-wire type, +S is the wire to monitor the voltage of +EXC and -S is to monitor -EXC.

With the method above, by using an indicator with the function to maintain the voltage between +EXC and -EXC constant, accurate measurements are possible without being affected by a cable length or temperature changes.

Connecting 4-wire type load cell & 6-wire input indicator

With a connector or a terminal block on the indicator side, +EXC and +S as well as -EXC and -S should be short-circuited to connect.

*If not, the display on the indicator may become unstable.

Connecting 6-wire type load cell & 4-wire input indicator

+S of the load cell should be short-circuited to +EXC and -S to -EXC, then connect only -EXC to the indicator. Otherwise, only +EXC and -EXC of the load cell should be connected to the indicator, and +S and -S should be wrapped by insulating tapes or the like.

We, Unipulse, is offering an optional service to attach a cable to a load cell.

We wire an optimal cable for an indicator you will use.
